How AI Overviews and AI Mode Change Digital Marketing in 2026 (A Guide for Agencies and Business Owners)
Quick answer: AI Overviews and AI Mode answer many searches directly on Google, so fewer people click through. SparkToro and Similarweb data show 68.01% of US Google searches ended with no click in January–April 2026. Marketing still works, but you now measure impressions, citations and brand demand as well as clicks, and you publish fewer, more original pages instead of mass content.
What Are AI Overviews and AI Mode?
AI Overviews are AI-generated summaries that appear above or within Google’s results for some queries, with links to supporting sources. AI Mode is a separate conversational search experience inside Google that handles longer, multi-step questions. Both draw on Google’s index and use a technique called query fan-out, which splits a question into several related searches before writing an answer.
Other assistants work differently. ChatGPT, Perplexity, Claude and Gemini retrieve web pages in their own ways, and they often cite different sources. That is why teams now talk about answer engine optimization (AEO) and generative engine optimization (GEO) alongside classic SEO.
What the Data Says
| Finding | Source | What it means |
|---|---|---|
| 68.01% of US Google searches had no click, Jan–Apr 2026 (60.45% in 2024) | SparkToro and Similarweb, via Search Engine Land (9 June 2026) | Fewer clicks per search; brand visibility matters more |
| AI Overviews on more than 20% of searches; click-through down about 60% when shown | Same study | Informational pages lose traffic first |
| AI Mode was only 0.34% of searches in the panel (Google says it has 1B+ monthly users) | Same study; panel covers desktop and mobile web only | Panel data may undercount app usage; treat as directional |
| 8% of visits clicked a link with an AI summary vs 15% without (68,000 queries) | Pew Research, July 2025 | Click gap is large, though Google disputes the method |
| Position-1 click-through fell 34.5% on informational queries | Ahrefs, as summarized by Search Engine Journal | Ranking first is worth less than before |
| About 70% of cited pages changed within 2–3 months | Authoritas, as summarized by Search Engine Journal | AI citations are volatile |
| Commercial results with AI Overviews up 71%; transactional down 5% (600,000+ US keywords) | Semrush, 2 July 2026 | Research-stage queries move first; buying queries stay classic |
| 10.7 sub-queries per prompt; 95% had zero volume; 26% included a brand name | Seer Interactive, Gemini 3 study (501 prompts, November 2025) | Cover related questions in depth, not one keyword per page |
| Over half start in an AI app; 70% use AI Overviews sometimes; 24% prefer AI for local queries | Orbit Media and QuestionPro (March 2026, n=1,110) | Local and brand searches still lean on classic Google |
Treat vendor and panel numbers as estimates. The Ahrefs and Authoritas figures come through secondary summaries, and Google says AI Overview clicks are “higher quality” without publishing comparative data.
What Google Says About Optimizing for AI Features
Google’s own guidance for AI Overviews and AI Mode (May 2025, summarized by Search Engine Journal) makes five points: publish unique, non-commodity content; answer questions in detail; keep pages crawlable and indexable; provide a good page experience; and measure performance beyond clicks.
Two more updates matter for 2026:
- Generative AI content guidance (updated 1 October 2026): AI can help create content, but producing many pages without added value may violate the scaled content abuse policy. Everything must be fact-checked.
- Search Console reports (3 June 2026): Impressions, pages, countries and devices for AI Overviews, AI Mode and Discover for a subset of sites. No clicks or click-through rate yet.
Google’s documentation also says you do not need special AI markup or tricks. The same signals that help SEO (helpful content, technical health, authority) support AI features.
Google Updates That Matter Now
2026 has been busy. The confirmed list: Discover core update (5 February), spam updates (24 March, 24 June, 18 August, 24 September to about 8 October) and core updates (27 March, 21 May, each about 12 days). No October core update had been announced as of 7 October.
Why this matters for AI visibility: spam updates target scaled, low-value content and manipulative links. Agencies that respond to AI search by publishing hundreds of generic pages invite both algorithmic and AI-quality filtering.
What Experts Are Saying
- Lily Ray (18 March 2026): aggressive GEO tactics can hurt SEO. Scaled AI content, self-promotional listicles and excess comparison pages saw drops. Treat SEO and GEO as one system.
- Experts in a February 2026 roundup (published by AI-visibility vendor Peec AI): mid-funnel content and brand popularity matter (Schwartz); original research and thought leadership earn third-party mentions (Indig); real customer conversations should choose your prompts (Reynolds); on-site content plus community and digital PR work together (Solis); and SEO still drives most visibility (Smarty, about 90%). Read this as opinion from a vendor.
- Community and digital PR: reported commentary from Kevin Indig and Aleyda Solis ties citations to community presence and PR. We could not access Reddit in this research, so we make no claim about community sentiment.
What Customers Actually Ask
HubSpot’s 2026 State of Marketing report found 86.4% of marketers use AI and about 30% saw decreased search traffic. AI prompts tend to be longer and more conversational than keywords. Seer’s fan-out study found sub-queries averaged 6.7 words, 21% included a year and 26% included a brand name.
Practical implication: build content around full customer questions, comparisons and decisions (“what does an agency cost for a dentist”, “is X better than Y for small teams”), not single head terms.
How Should Digital Marketers Use Claude vs ChatGPT?
This is the biggest search query in this topic (about 1,900 monthly searches in our keyword file). There is no universal winner. A sensible approach:
Pick by task, not brand.
Test each assistant on your own work: research summaries, outline drafts, ad variations, data cleanup and reporting.
Give every tool the same brief.
Compare accuracy, tone, citation behavior and how much editing the draft needs.
Verify facts.
Check numbers, quotes and claims against primary sources. AI tools can state errors with confidence.
Keep humans on expertise.
Use AI for structure and speed, then add original data, experience and judgment.
Protect confidential data.
Review each provider’s data and privacy settings before pasting client information.
AI-Powered Marketing Tools: What to Look For
Common categories include AI visibility trackers, content assistants, analytics assistants and automation platforms. Evaluate any tool by asking:
- Does it show where its data comes from and how often it updates?
- Can it track prompts across Google AI features, ChatGPT, Perplexity and Gemini?
- Does it export data you can use in your own reports?
- Does the vendor promise guaranteed mentions? If so, walk away.
Will Digital Marketing Be Replaced by AI?
Not as a discipline. AI automates tasks (drafting, reporting, bidding) and changes how people find businesses, so roles change. HubSpot’s data shows marketers adopting AI widely while budgets still rise for content and website work. The skills that gain value are strategy, original research, brand building, analytics and judgment about what to publish.
How to Identify Gaps in Answer Engine Visibility
Use this seven-step audit for AEO and GEO.
List 30–50 real customer questions.
Pull them from sales calls, support tickets, reviews and Search Console queries.
Test each question
in Google (AI Overviews and AI Mode), ChatGPT, Perplexity and Gemini. Record whether your brand appears, which competitors appear and which sources are cited.
Check crawl access.
Confirm robots.txt, rendering and indexing allow retrieval.
Map content gaps.
Where competitors answer a question and you do not, plan a page or a section.
Audit entities.
Make sure your site, Google Business Profile and profiles describe the same services, locations and people.
Find citation sources.
Note which third-party sites influence answers (directories, publications, communities).
Repeat monthly.
AI answers vary by query, context and system, so track trends rather than single results.
SERPorians’ generative engine optimization service follows this pattern. We do not sell guaranteed mentions, fake citations or llms.txt shortcuts.
What to Change in Your Marketing

FAQ
What are AI Overviews?
AI-generated summaries on Google results pages, with links to supporting sources, shown for some queries.
How do AI Overviews affect click-through rates?
Studies disagree on size but agree on direction. SparkToro and Similarweb found about a 60% drop when one appears; Pew found 8% vs 15% clicks; Ahrefs found a 34.5% fall at position one on informational queries.
What is the difference between SEO, AEO and GEO?
SEO optimizes for search rankings. AEO focuses on being the direct answer. GEO adds prompt research, entity clarity, citation tracking and AI visibility monitoring. They rely on the same fundamentals.
Do I need llms.txt or special AI markup?
Google says AI features do not need special markup or AI-specific rewriting. Focus on helpful content, crawlability and authority.
Can anyone guarantee ChatGPT or Gemini will recommend my business?
No. Results vary by query, context, location and system.
Is AI-written content safe?
It can be, when it adds value, is fact-checked and is not mass-produced. Google’s 1 October 2026 guidance warns that many low-value pages can violate its scaled content abuse policy.
How do I track AI traffic?
Use the Search Console generative AI reports for impressions, and GA4 for referral traffic. Ask your agency how it handles AI referrals that appear as direct or organic.
Will digital marketing be replaced by AI?
The tasks will change, not the need for strategy, original expertise and accountability.
What should a small business do first?
Test 30 real customer questions across Google and AI assistants, fix crawl and entity gaps, then create content that answers them in depth. See our agency guide for budgeting.
